Moonborn Heir Novel Chapter 30 – The room collectively gasps, the sound echoing in my ears.
My own shock is mirrored in the wide eyes of the wolves around us, but no one is more stunned than Sabrina. Her face is a mask of disbelief, her lips parting as she stares at Kael, then at me. “I…” My voice catches, barely above a whisper. This isn’t real. It can’t be.
Kael extends his hand, his gaze unwavering. “Talia,” he says, his voice softer now, almost… pleading. My fingers hover over his, trembling as I hesitate. But when I finally place my hand in his, the world shifts. The connection is instant, electric, and overwhelming.
A jolt shoots through my body, setting my skin alight and making my breath hitch. His touch is warm, grounding yet all-consuming, and
suddenly, my senses flood with him—his scent, rich and woodsy, with a hint of something darker, more primal.
It wraps around me, drowning out everything else. The ballroom, the crowd, the whispers—they all vanish. All I can feel, all I can smell, is Kael.
Eira purrs deeply in my mind, her voice filled with a satisfaction that shakes me to my core. “Do you feel it? This is what fate feels like, Talia.”
I glance up at him, my heart pounding as his grey eyes meet mine. There’s something in his gaze—intensity, curiosity, and something deeper, something I can’t name but feel like I’ve known forever. My knees feel weak, and it’s only the strength of his grip that keeps me upright.
Kael doesn’t say a word. He simply leads me onto the dance floor, his movements steady and sure, like he’s done this a thousand times. The room seems to hold its breath, stunned intosilence as the Alpha of Shadow Ridge guides me—a nobody—into the center of the room.
His hand settles on my waist, and the warmth of his touch burns through the fabric of my dress. I place my other hand on his shoulder, my fingers barely brushing against him, and yet I feel like I’ve been struck by lightning.
The music swells around us, and Kael begins to move, his steps fluid and commanding. I follow, instinct taking ver as my body matches his rhythm.
For a moment, it feels like we’re the only two people in the world. His gaze doesn’t waver, locking me in place, and I can’t look away.
My wolf hums with approval, her presence stronger than ever, as if she’s finally found what we’ve been missing. But then reality creeps back in, and I catch sight of Sabrina. She stands at the edge of the dance floor, her silver dress glinting under the chandelier lights, her expression frozen in disbelief.
Her mother, Selene, stands beside her, her sharp features twisted in anger. Their fury is palpable, radiating across the room, but Kael doesn’t seem to
notice—or care. His focus is entirely on me. “Kael,” I whisper, my voice shaky. “Why… why are you doing this?”
His eyes flicker with something I can’t name, and his grip on my waist tightens slightly, as if anchoring me to him. “Because I wanted to,” he says simply, his deep voice steady and low, as if that explains everything. I’m too stunned to respond, the weight of his words settling in my chest.
I can feel the eyes of the entire room on us, their whispers like a distant hum. But in this moment, with Kael’s hands on me and his scent filling my lungs, none of it matters. Nothing matters except the way he makes me feel—seen, wanted, alive.
And for the first time in my life, I let myself believe that maybe, just maybe, I’m not invisible after all. Kael’s hand rests firmly on my waist, his other holding mine as we move in sync across the floor. His presence is overwhelming—his touch, his scent, the way his gaze pins me in place.
I can hardly breathe, let alone think. “Why have I never seen you before?” he asks, his deep voice low and intimate, meant only for me. I glance away, trying to steady my voice. “I think we run in different circles, Alpha,” I reply softly, trying to inject some humor, but the truth hangs heavy in my words.
His lips quirk into a faint smile, and he tilts his head, studying me. “Different circles? Is that what you call it? I’d say I’ve been blind if I missed someone like you.” Heat rushes to my cheeks, and I stumble slightly, but his hand tightens around mine, steadying me.
“I… I’m just a servant,” I manage, barely above a whisper. “You wouldn’t notice someone like me.” Kael’s gaze sharpens, his brow furrowing. He leans in slightly, his voice dropping. “A servant?” His eyes scan me, and his nostrils flare subtly, his expression darkening with something unreadable. “That’s not right. I scent high-rank blood in you.” I freeze, my pulse racing. “What?” I whisper, my voice barely audible over the music.
“You’re not meant to be a servant,” he says firmly, his hand tightening on mine as if to anchor the truth of his words. “Your blood, your scent… it’s powerful, Talia. It commands respect. Not servitude.” The certainty in his voice shakes me. My heart pounds, a mix of confusion, disbelief, and something I can’t name. “You must be mistaken,” I say, though the words feel hollow even as I speak them. “I’m nothing… just an orphan taken in by the Shadowmeres.
Kael’s jaw tightens, his gaze growing more intense. “You’re far more than that. I can feel it.” His words settle over me, heavy and electric, like a storm gathering in my chest. My breath catches as we continue to move, the rest of the room blurring into nothing. His gaze doesn’t waver, locking me in place, and I can’t look away. My wolf hums with approval, her presence stronger than ever, as if she’s finally found what we’ve been missing.
“But why do you care?” I whisper, unable to stop myself. “You’ve got Sabrina, and the powerful alliance her family brings to Shadow Ridge. Why would you care about a lowly maid like me?” Kael’s lips press into a thin line, his expression unreadable. “I care because… I see you.” The simplicity of his words strikes me harder than anything else. I feel exposed, as though he’s peeled back every layer I’ve built to hide behind.
My thoughts scatter, leaving only the raw, aching need to believe him. The music slows, the rhythm easing into something softer, more intimate. Kael guides me closer, his hand sliding to the small of my back, drawing me nearer until there’s barely any space between us. My heart pounds wildly, and my head spins with emotions I can’t begin to process.
“This feels… impossible,” I whisper, my voice trembling. “Like a dream.” “Then let it be a dream,” he says softly, his forehead lowering until it brushes against mine. Hisbreath is warm against my skin, his scent wrapping around me like a cocoon. “Just for tonight.” His fingers trail along my arm, slow and deliberate, igniting a warmth that spreads through me like wildfire. My skin burns under his touch, every nerve heightened, every breath shallow.
His hand brushes my cheek, his thumb grazing my jawline, and the sensation sends a shiver down my spine. The way he touches me, like I’m something fragile and precious, is so gentle, it makes my heart ache. His fingertips linger at the baseof my neck, the heat of his palm seeping into my skin as
he holds me there, suspended in a moment that feels too big to contain. “Kael…” I whisper, his name slipping from my lips like a secret.
His eyes darken, his thumb brushing against the rapid pulse at my throat. “You’re not invisible, Talia,” he murmurs, his voice low and rough. “Not to me.”
The words send a wave of emotion crashing over me, and for a fleeting second, I believe him. I believe in the possibility of something more.
But then the moment passes, and he pulls back just enough to let the world seep in again. My breath catches as the whispers of the crowd return, along with the weight of their stares. I glance at Sabrina, and my stomach twists at the fury etched into her perfect features.
Beside her, Selene’s sharp eyes cut through me like daggers, her lips pressed into a thin, angry line. She’ll make me pay for this. Kael steps back slightly, his hand still lingering on mine as the tension between us hums like a live wire. “Thank you for the dance,” he says softly, his gaze lingering before he releases me. As he steps away, I’m left standing in the center of the floor, my heart pounding, my skin still burning from his touch.
The room feels too bright, too loud, and yet all I can hear is the echo of his words. You’re not invisible. Not to me. Sabrina’s glare pierces through the haze, and I know the storm brewing in her eyes is far from over. But for now, I let myself hold onto the warmth Kael’s touch left behind, even as the world
around me threatens to take it away.
