After My Husband Sent Me to Learn the Rules, He Regretted – Chapter 7

Tears filled his eyes.
I turned away:

“I’ve hired a lawyer.”
“After the divorce, it’s over between us forever.”

Nathan’s neck veins bulged, fists clenched:

“Please, Anna, I can’t lose you.”
“I acted like I didn’t care, but it was my pride.”
“I love you.”

His tears left me feeling bewildered and uneasy.

Before, I’d have leapt at such a confession.
Now, he just disgusted me.

Seeing his disheveled appearance, I spoke slowly:

“You say you’re sorry. Where’s my bracelet?”

Hope flared in his eyes:

“I’ll get it back, Anna. Wait for me.”

Three days passed, no Nathan.
My body recovered, and I flew to Ethan’s hometown.
He’d invited me to check his tea harvest.

As the plane landed, my lawyer texted that Nathan refused divorce, wanting to meet.
I replied crisply:

“No meeting. If he won’t agree, we’ll sue.”

Nathan had changed.
He called incessantly. After I hung up, he bombarded me with texts:

[Anna, I got the bracelet. When can you come and get it?]
[No divorce. Where are you? I need to see you.]
[Forgive me. I didn’t know what was going on. I’ve silenced everyone.]
[No one knows, and I don’t care. I’ll take you everywhere, okay?]

These things I’d once craved left me unmoved.

If I felt anything for Nathan, it was only hate. Nothing else.

Soon, Ethan visited.

Seeing me, he gasped:

“Anna, you’ve lost so much weight!”

I smiled:
“Isn’t thinner better?”

He shook his head:
“Health matters more than looks.”

His words made my heart skip.

I’d longed for Nathan’s attention, but he’d still frown at my gaunt figure:
“You look embarrassing to take out.”

I ate boiled greens and took diet pills, never imagining that someone would pull me from the mire, telling me that my health mattered.

Seeing my teary eyes, Ethan scratched his hair awkwardly:

“I didn’t mean you look bad, Anna, don’t misunderstand, I just…”

I cut in:
“Ethan, do you like me?”

In the sunlight, his face reddened:
“Yes, but Anna, I don’t want to take advantage.”
“I’ve loved you forever, but back then, you only saw Nathan.”
“You’re not healed emotionally. I won’t push you now.”

I closed my eyes, trying to hide my tears:
“But I’ve been married, pregnant, I’ve…”

He gently covered my mouth:
“Anna, none of it’s your fault.”
“In my heart, you’re always the best.”
