After My Husband Sent Me to Learn the Rules, He Regretted – Chapter 5
Before, I would have wept, swearing that it was our child.
But as I stared at my reddened wrist, I felt exhausted.
I yanked my arm free and looked him in the eye, saying:
“Think what you want.”
Shocked, he punched the wall:
“Anna, you’ve outdone yourself.”
“I told you, Clara’s just my sister. Why, out of jealousy, do you keep doing these outrageous things?”
The seriousness in his tone struck me as utterly ridiculous.
I laughed:
“Nathan, you call me outrageous?”
“Abandoning your pregnant wife in a den of wolves and ignoring her for six months—how dare you say that?”
His eyes widened in disbelief:
“Are you saying the child is mine?”
Men like him, who are unfaithful themselves, assume that everyone cheats.
I nodded:
“Yes, it’s yours.”
His face softened, trembling slightly.
He leaned in, as if trying to catch the faintest sound of the baby.
I stepped back:
“When I’ve recuperated, I’ll have an abortion.”
He shot up, bewildered:
“Why, Anna? It’s our child!”
I was puzzled too:
“Exactly. Because it’s yours, I won’t keep it.”
He shook uncontrollably:
“No! It’s my child, you can’t decide its fate!”
He pulled me toward the door:
“Come home, Anna. Don’t you love me? Didn’t you fight to marry me? I forgive what you did to Clara. Let’s start anew.”
I couldn’t break free. During the struggle, I slapped him.
He froze, and seeing his swelling cheek, I felt a rush of relief.
Why torment myself?
They are the ones who were wrong, and they should suffer.
I did nothing wrong.
I shouldn’t be treated like this.
My love was pure, but they dirtied it, and me.
Seeing my twisted, exhilarated expression, Nathan snapped out of his shock.
He pinned me to the wall, his eyes filled with a complex mix of emotions:
“Anna, what’s happened to you?”
I glared back coldly:
“Ask your dear sister Clara.”
He sighed helplessly:
“Still jealous? Come home, and I’ll keep my distance from her.”
I shook my head:
“Nathan, distance won’t fix this.”
“You sent me to that sanatorium, chained me up, let those repulsive old men violate me, and forced me to eat endless amounts of fatty meat.”
“You think distance makes me forgive you?”
Nathan stared, bewildered:
“No, Anna. I sent you there because Clara said you were too impulsive and needed a quiet place to reflect…”
I burst into laughter:
“Nathan, do you believe that?”
“Clara hates me. You really think she’d let her brother treat me well?”
