After Losing His Memory, He Begged My Forgiveness Novel Chapter 5 – He remembered. And then she walked in.

John’s whisper sent a chill down Lily’s spine.

“I remember,” he said again, louder this time. His eyes were wide, fixed on her like she was the only anchor he had.

Lily stood frozen in the hallway, her daughter clinging to her neck. “Mommy,” the little girl whispered, “why is Daddy crying?”

Before Lily could answer, the doorbell rang again—longer this time. Impatient.

John flinched. “Melissa,” he muttered.

Lily’s grip tightened on her daughter. She could feel the tiny heartbeat against her chest, thumping fast. “Go to your room,” she whispered, setting her down gently. “Close the door and play quietly, okay?”

The girl nodded and scurried off.

John stayed kneeling, glass shards around him like a halo of broken promises.

The bell rang a third time. Lily opened the door.

Melissa Moore stood there, wrapped in a designer coat, makeup immaculate, like she was arriving for brunch instead of barging into the ruins of a life she helped shatter.

She looked past Lily into the apartment. “He’s here, isn’t he?”

Lily didn’t answer. She didn’t need to.

John’s voice came from behind. “Why are you here?”

Melissa pushed past Lily without waiting. “You haven’t returned my calls. Your mother won’t speak to me. Your company froze my credit cards.” Her voice was a mix of panic and anger. “What is going on, John?”

He stood now, shoulders squared, eyes sharp.

“I remembered.”

Melissa blinked. “Remembered what?”

John looked at her like he was seeing her for the first time—really seeing her. “Everything. The hotel. The fights. What I said to my daughter. What I did to Lily.”

Silence.

“You told me you loved me,” Melissa said, voice trembling now. “You said you were going to marry me once the divorce was final.”

“I was an idiot.”

Lily leaned against the wall, arms crossed, watching it all unfold.

Melissa stepped forward, her voice desperate. “You don’t mean that. You said Lily was cold. Controlling. That she didn’t understand you.”

“I said a lot of things I regret.” John’s tone was flat. “But I remember now. And I remember what you did too. How you came between us. How you fed the fire I was already burning in.”

Melissa’s lip trembled. “So that’s it? You remember a few things and suddenly she’s the saint and I’m the villain?”

“No one said Lily was a saint,” he said quietly. “But she never lied to me. Never used me. And she gave me something you never could.”

Melissa’s eyes narrowed. “What?”

John looked toward the hallway where their daughter’s bedroom door was slightly ajar, a soft pink light glowing from inside. “Family.”

Melissa laughed, brittle. “You really think you can just walk back into that? You think she’ll forgive you?”

John looked at Lily.

Lily didn’t move. Her face gave nothing away.

“I don’t know,” he said honestly. “But I’ll spend the rest of my life trying.”

Melissa scoffed. “You’ll regret this.”

“No,” John said. “I regret what I did to my wife. To my daughter. Not this.”

Melissa turned on her heel and stormed out, slamming the door behind her.

The silence that followed was deafening.

Lily exhaled. “You remembered everything?”

He nodded slowly. “Every ugly thing. Every word I wish I could take back.”

He moved closer. “But also… how much I loved you. And how much I still—” He stopped himself. “I won’t say it. Not now. You don’t owe me anything.”

She looked at him, really looked. His eyes were clear now—no confusion, no dazed affection borrowed from a past version of himself. Just raw, painful clarity.

“You were right,” he said. “Back then, I let power change me. I let ego drive me. I stopped being the man you married. But seeing you now… the way you care for her, the way you’ve carried everything… I realize I never stopped needing you.”

Lily felt something stir in her chest. Not forgiveness. Not yet.

But maybe… the faintest crack in the wall she’d built.

“John,” she said softly, “go sleep on the couch.”

He looked surprised—but hopeful. “Can I… stay?”

“For tonight.”

He nodded. “Thank you.”

As she walked past him toward her daughter’s room, he whispered, “Goodnight, Lily.”

She paused, then glanced back.

“Goodnight, Samoyed.”
