Moonborn Heir Novel Chapter 5 – For what feels like an eternity, we stay like that, the silence between us no longer suffocating but strangely comforting.
My heart pounds in sync with his, a rhythm that’s both steady and soothing, and I let myself believe, just for a moment, that maybe I don’t have to do this alone.
Then, without warning, he tilts my chin up, his gaze searching mine, and I can see the question in his eyes. A question I’m too afraid to answer but too drawn to ignore.
My breath catches, and before I can second-guess myself, his lips are on mine, a slow, tentative kiss that ignites something deep within me.
The kiss is soft, almost reverent, but there’s a darkness beneath it, a hunger I can feel simmering just below the surface. And for the first time in what feels like forever, I don’t feel broken or abandoned. I feel seen, wanted, like someone is holding me together instead of tearing me apart.
When we finally pull away, I’m breathless, my heart pounding harder than ever. I meet his gaze, searching for any sign of regret, but all I see is a fierce protectiveness, a promise I don’t fully understand.
“You don’t have to carry your burdens alone,” he says quietly, his thumb brushing against my cheek. “If you need someone, I’m here.”
His words unravel something inside me, and I have to fight to keep the tears at bay. I’ve spent so long being strong, holding everything together, that I don’t know how to let someone else in. But Lucian’s offer is like a lifeline, a chance to breathe, if only for a moment.
“Thank you,” I whisper, my voice barely audible. It’s not a commitment, not a promise, but it’s all I can give right now.
He nods, understanding in his eyes, and as I gaze into them, I feel a flicker of hope. Maybe, just maybe, I can survive this – protect my child, keep him safe from those who would use him. And maybe, in this unfamiliar place, I’ve found an ally, someone who implicitly understands the weight of the secrets I carry.
As he leaves, the room feels emptier, but the warmth of his presence lingers, wrapping around me like a shield. I lie back, my hand on my stomach, feeling the faint life stirring within, and for the first time since Kael’s rejection, I let myself believe that we might be okay.
The kiss still lingers on my lips as I lay back trying to sleep, heart racing. The moment with Lucian felt forbidden, an intensity that shook me to my core. I can still feel his heat, his unspoken claim over me – despite every instinct screaming at me to resist. I pull the bedsheets over my head, needing the cover to regain control, to remind myself why I’m here. Why I can’t let anyone – especially him – get too close.
Not five minutes pass before there’s a soft knock on the door, and I tense, half-expecting Lucian again. But when I open the door, it’s Rhea, her face etched with concern…and suspicion. She glances at me, taking in my flushed face and wary expression.
She hands me a wrapped package. “I brought you some food.” I open the package ravenously and gulp down the cold meat, grateful for the nourishment my body desperately needs.
“Is everything alright?” she asks quietly, stepping inside. “I saw Lucian leave as I was heading over.”
I swallow, composing myself. “I’m fine. Just…it’s been a long night.”
But Rhea doesn’t let it go. She raises an eyebrow, her gaze searching my face. “Did anything happen between you and Lucian?”
I force a casual laugh, shaking my head. “No, nothing happened.” The lie tastes bitter, but I’m not ready to share that moment not even with her.
She gives me a skeptical look but lets it slide. “Just be careful, Talia,” she murmurs, her voice dropping. “You can’t let him get too close. He can’t find out… about the baby.”
“I know,” I reassure her, keeping my tone light, though I feel the weight of her warning settle heavily in my chest. “You don’t need to worry about that.”
Changing the subject, I glance over at her, raising an eyebrow. “Just promise me you won’t get too close to Cade either. I don’t trust him, Rhea.”
Rhea’s cheeks flush, and she gives a small, almost shy smile. “Cade is sweet, Talia.”
I snort, crossing my arms. “Sweet? He practically glared holes through me. It’s pretty clear he doesn’t like me.”
Rhea waves a hand dismissively. “Don’t worry about him. I told him why we left, and he understands.”
I freeze, my eyes widening. “You told him what?” My heart races, dread tightening my throat.
She reaches out, placing a calming hand on my arm. “Relax, Talia. I didn’t tell him anything important. I just said you and Ronan had a falling out…that it was complicated.”
I let out a shaky breath, the tension easing slightly. “Alright…but be careful with him.”
She nods, her expression softening. “I will. I promise.” Her gaze lingers on me, filled with concern. “Do you need anything else right now?”
I hesitate, then murmur, “Will you stay with me tonight?” The vulnerability in my voice surprises even me, but I need her comfort, her presence.
“Of course,” she whispers, wrapping an arm around me. We slip under the covers together, her warmth a steady reassurance, and I snuggle against her soft body, letting the exhaustion finally overtake me.
As we drift off, I feel the tension of the night start to melt away, Rhea’s steady breaths grounding me. The storm of emotions swirling within me quiets, and I finally find a sliver of peace.
A sharp knock on the door jerks me out of bed. Rhea stirs beside me but rolls over, still half-asleep. My heart thuds in my chest as I get up and open the door, finding Lucian standing there, his expression as unreadable as ever. His presence fills the doorway, drawing a line between safety and danger, between comfort and a challenge I’m not sure I’m ready for. Cade is standing behind him, glaring at me.
