Moonborn Heir Novel Chapter 20 – I sit in the corner of Lucian’s mansion, my mind a whirl of exhaustion and disbelief.
The adrenaline of battle is still thrumming through my veins, but now it mingles with something heavier — a raw ache from facing Ronan, my own brother, in combat. I replay his words, his accusations cutting deep, his face twisted with anger and betrayal.
Around me, the Darkguard warriors tend to their wounds, their movements quiet and somber, yet I feel like an outsider in the room. I’ve fought alongside them, yet the clash with Ronan still echoes in my heart, the sharpness of his accusations casting a dark shadow over everything.
I try to focus, to shake off the feeling, but it clings to me, lingering like the scent of blood and smoke that fills the air. Cade prowls near the edge of the room, his gaze shifting to me with a look so venomous it almost makes me flinch. He strides forward, his lip curling. “
Convenient, isn’t it? The enemy just happens to show up after you become one of us.” The room stills, all eyes flicking to us, wary and waiting. My pulse quickens, but I hold his gaze. “I’ve fought for this pack just as much as any of you,” I say, my voice sharper than I intended.
“Or have you already forgotten?” “Oh, I haven’t forgotten,” he sneers, crossing his arms. “But I’ve also got a memory of a certainShadow Ridge Alpha who used to be your mate.” “Enough,” Lucian’s voice cuts through the room, low and controlled, yet simmering with anger.
He steps toward Cade, his eyes darkening. “You will watch your tone with your Luna.” Cade’s face twists, his eyes flashing with defiance. “Our Luna? I don’t even trust her. You think she’s here to help? Look at what’s happened since she arrived!” My stomach twists with fury and frustration, but before I can respond, Lucian is on him in a flash, delivering a hard strike across Cade’s face.
Cade stumbles back, a hand pressed to his jaw, but the fury in his eyes only intensifies. The rest of the Darkguard falls silent, their gazes flicking
between Lucian and Cade with a mixture of fear and anticipation. I swallow, my throat tight as I look from Cade to Lucian. “There’s something you should know, Lucian,” I say, my voice just loud enough for everyone to hear.
“During my Initiation…Cade cornered me. He told me you wouldn’t be able to protect me — just like you couldn’t protect your last Luna.” The words hang in the air, a shockwave of silence rippling through the room. I feel my heart pounding, but I refuse to look away, refusing to give Cade the satisfaction of seeing me waver. Lucian’s gaze narrows, his expression turning to cold steel as he looks at Cade.
Cade’s mouth opens, his face darkening with anger. “You’re lying,” he spits, his voice shaking with rage. “I said no such thing. She’s just making this up to turn you against me, Lucian. She’s the one who’s dangerous here.” I see the flicker of doubt in some of the Darkguard’s eyes, but Lucian doesn’t falter. He steps forward, his movements slow and calculated, each step bringing him closer to Cade, until they’re mere inches apart.
“You think you can slither your way out of this?” Lucian’s voice is deadly quiet, yet filled with a dangerous edge. “You’ve questioned my judgment one too many times, Cade. Challenging my Luna? Implying I can’t protect my own? You’ve gone too far.” Cade’s eyes harden, and for a moment, he seems ready to fight, to take on his Alpha.
But Lucian doesn’t give him a chance. In a swift movement, he grabs Cade by the throat, slamming him down onto the floor with a force that makes the entire room gasp. Cade struggles beneath him, his hands clawing at Lucian’s, but Lucian’s grip doesn’t loosen. “I should end you right now,” Lucian growls, his voice vibrating with a fury that sends chills down my spine. “You think you can question me? You think you can turn my pack against me, against
her?”
Cade’s face is red, his breathing ragged as he tries to speak, but Lucian’s grip is iron. I watch, my own breath caught, my heart pounding as the room fills with the weight of the moment, as everyone wonders if Lucian will actually go through with it. Finally, Cade’s defiance falters, a flicker of fear flashing in his eyes. His hand slowly lifts in a gesture of surrender. “Alpha…please…” His voice is hoarse, barely audible.
“I was wrong…I was out of line…” Lucian holds him there a moment longer, his eyes blazing with anger, before he finally releases him, shoving him back onto the ground. Cade scrambles up, stumbling backward, his expression shifting from anger to a mask of submission.
“I apologize,” Cade says, his tone taking on an eerie softness as he lowers his head, his voice smooth but lacking sincerity. “I see now…I was mistaken. Luna Talia is…an asset to our pack. I pledge my loyalty to her and to you, Alpha Lucian.” Lucian’s gaze doesn’t waver, and though he nods, seemingly accepting Cade’s words, I can’t shake the unease settling in my stomach.
I meet Cade’s gaze, and for a brief moment, a glint of something dark flickers in his eyes before he looks away. The rest of the Darkguard shifts uncomfortably, watching, waiting. Lucian’s posture finally relaxes, his voice calm yet commanding as he speaks.
“Let this be a warning. We are united, or we are nothing. Betrayal will not be tolerated. Not by anyone.”As murmurs of agreement ripple through the room, Cade steps back, his expression docile, but I see the bitterness lurking behind his eyes.
