Moonborn Heir Novel Chapter 19 – The forest is alive with the scent of battle. I run through the shadows, my senses heightened, every fiber of my being focused on one target — Kael.
His scent is sharp, bitter, laced with fury and something darker. I track him through the underbrush, my paws pounding the earth in silent
strides, my eyes fixed ahead. He doesn’t know I’m here, doesn’t sense me yet. I could end this quickly.
Pounce now, catch him off guard, finish it before he even has a chance to fight back. But no. That’s not how this will end. I want him to see me, to know that I’m coming for him. I let out a low, threatening growl, a warning that shatters the silence of the night.
Kael spins around, his cold gray eyes narrowing as they lock onto me. His face twists, a sneer forming as he realizes who stands before him. “Lucian,” he spits, his voice dripping with contempt. “I was wondering when you’d show up.”
I take a step closer, my muscles coiled, ready to strike. “You’re on Darkfang land, Kael. You’re trespassing. And for what? Another failed attempt to take what doesn’t belong to you?” Kael’s eyes flash with rage, and he bares his teeth, his voice a snarl. “
Talia was mine. You stole her, twisted her, made her one of you.” My own anger flares, hot and unforgiving. “Stole her?” I growl, incredulous. “You rejected her, left her broken and alone.
And now you’re angry that she found something — someone — better?” I shake my head, disgust curling in my gut as I stare him down. “You’re a fool, Kael. And you don’t deserve her.” Kael’s eyes darken, a vicious gleam in them as he steps closer.
“You think I need validation from a mongrel like you?” he sneers. “This isn’t just about Talia. This is about retribution. The War of Fangs should’ve ended with all of Darkfang bowing to Shadow Ridge. My father’s vision was clear — one ruler, one pack holding all the territories.”
His voice lowers, a chilling promise. “I’ll claim what’s owed to us, starting with you.” “Your father’s vision was nothing but a twisted hunger for power,” I snap back, my voice cold and unwavering. “He wanted war, Kael. And you’re no different, are you? Just a slave to his ambition, bent on destruction and nothing else.”
Kael snarls, his voice dripping with disdain. “It’s called legacy, Lucian. One that’s been tarnished by Darkfang for far too long. I’m here to correct that, to avenge the wolves who fell at your father’s hands. And when I’m done, there won’t be a Darkfang left standing.” He narrows his eyes. “I’ll take it all — the lands, the power…and Talia.”
A cold rage settles over me as I stare him down, his words fueling a fire that’s been smoldering inside me since he crossed onto our land. “You’ll take nothing,” I growl, every word a promise. “Talia is free — free of you, and free of the hatred that poisons Shadow Ridge. I won’t let you drag her back into the shadows you call a legacy.”
With a roar, Kael lunges at me, his teeth bared, claws flashing. I meet him head-on, our bodies colliding in a brutal clash of muscle and fury. His claws rake across my shoulder, pain searing through me, but I don’t falter. I push back, my own claws sinking into his flesh, and he lets out a pained snarl. We circle each other, teeth snapping, eyes locked in a deadly glare.
“You’re weak, Kael,” I taunt, circling him, my voice a low growl. “You think you can come into my territory, threaten my pack, my mate, and walk away unscathed?”Kael sneers, his gray eyes blazing with hatred. “She was mine first!” he spits, desperation lacing his words. “You think she’ll ever truly be yours? She’s bound to me, to my blood.”
“You think she’s some possession to claim? Talia is stronger than either of us, and she chose her path. A path away from you,” I snarl, baring my teeth as I close in on him. Kael roars, charging at me again, and we crash together in a whirlwind of claws and fangs.
His teeth sink into my foreleg, sending a jolt of pain up my spine, but I retaliate with a vicious swipe that catches him across the muzzle. Blood sprays, staining the ground, and he stumbles back, momentarily dazed. “Is this the strength you promised your pack?” I taunt, circling him, watching his every move. “Or are you just another coward hiding behind delusions of grandeur?”
His rage boils over, and he lunges at me with renewed ferocity, but I’m ready. I sidestep, driving my shoulder into his side and knocking him off balance. He stumbles, and I don’t give him a chance to recover. I spring at him, forcing him to the ground, my jaws closing around his throat.
“Yield,” I growl, my voice a deadly whisper. “Leave Darkfang, or the next time we meet, I won’t show mercy.” Kael struggles beneath me, his breaths labored, his pride wounded as much as his body. For a moment, he looks ready to continue the fight, defiance burning in his eyes.
But then he snarls, breaking free and staggering back, his gaze filled with hate and something darker — an unspoken vow. “This isn’t over,” he spits, blood dripping from his wounds as he retreats into the shadows. “You’ll regret this, Lucian. Mark my words.”
I watch him disappear, my body thrumming with adrenaline, my mind consumed with the memory of his words. He’ll be back — of that I have no doubt. But I’ll be ready.
The fire in my veins cools as I think of Talia, of the way her presence has bound us, given me strength I never knew I needed. I turn, my paws carrying me swiftly through the forest, back to her, back to the place I know I belong.
