I Switched Fiancés After His Betrayal with My Stepsister Novel Chapter 5 – I gritted my teeth, my eyes burning with jealousy.
“Mom, what should I do? I can’t believe this blind man is so generous. If Adaline marries him, she’ll be above me forever.”
“And Johan and I haven’t even sorted things out yet. He’s been so distant lately.”
“You said winning him over meant giving him everything. If this fails, won’t I be at a loss?”
Neriah’s face was a mixture of worry and resentment.
Listening quietly to their conversation, a wave of disdain washed over me. I couldn’t believe Neriah would stoop to such shameless tactics to win Johan over.
Staff gossip had reached me about how my stepmother used underhanded methods to marry my father, and now she and her daughter seemed to follow the same path.
Bria frowned, quickly offering reassurance.
“Neriah, don’t worry. No matter how talented Isaac is, he’s still blind. Even if he’s more accomplished than Johan, will the Young family let a blind man lead them in the future? Johan is still your best shot. Keep Johan happy, and you’ll soon be the lady of the house.”
Neriah nodded eagerly at her mother’s words. I then saw Bria hand a small vial to Neriah.
“Give this to Johan when you see him. It’ll strengthen your bond. Once you have a child, the Walkers, with their status and wealth, won’t reject their grandchild.”
Neriah’s face lit up with admiration. But inside me, a chill lingered.
Sometimes I felt sorry for my father. Did he really know what kind of person his wife was?
Just then, my phone buzzed with a message from Isaac:
“Do you like it, my dear?”
I glanced at the magazine I had flipped through yesterday, filled with stories of Isaac’s achievements. That handsome face… If not for the accident, he might have already been the head of the Young family. He was an extraordinary man, and I never thought I’d be the one to marry him.
I replied with two words: “Thank you.”
The voices outside faded. After a quick wash, I noticed the scars on my back, some still tender. I decided to go to the hospital to have them checked.
I went to the hospital where Remy worked, asking him to prescribe some medication. My physical therapy for my leg was also his responsibility. When he saw the scars, he was visibly taken aback. I simply smiled and insisted I was fine.
It had been a while since we last saw each other, so Remy invited me to lunch. Unable to refuse, I agreed.
He led the way to a restaurant. As soon as we sat down, two familiar faces appeared.
Since their public breakup, Johan and Neriah didn’t bother hiding their relationship. They walked over, hand in hand. Seeing me with Remy, jealousy flickered in Johan’s eyes.
“Well, well, Adaline. I didn’t think someone like you would be out here with another guy. Lucky for me, I didn’t marry you; I would have been a laughingstock. Poor Isaac, blind as he is, how can he handle his fiancée being unfaithful?”
After I refused him, Johan bombarded me with messages, a mix of disbelief and anger.
“Adaline, what do you see in that cripple Isaac? You’re really picking him over someone like me? Apologize and maybe I’ll take you back.”
I knew Johan didn’t love me; his messages were just his pride talking, bruised by my rejection. A spoiled brat like him wasn’t used to being turned down. I ignored his messages, deleting them without hesitation.
His insults drew a crowd, eyes studying me as whispers floated around.
“Wow, she’s so pretty, but who knew she’d be like this? You can’t judge a book by its cover.”
“Isn’t she the Myers heiress? How scandalous, running around with other men. What a disgrace.”
“Women like her shouldn’t be shaming themselves in public. Poor guy, marrying someone like that.”
Neriah pushed to the front, eyes red, feigning innocence.
“Please, don’t judge my sister like that. She’s been led astray. She’s really quite innocent, just made some foolish choices.”
Her words only fueled the crowd’s disdain, some even throwing food and drinks. Johan stepped forward, a wicked smile spreading.
“Adaline, just apologize and join me tonight. I’ll clear up this misunderstanding.”
I clenched my fists, anger surging. I lifted my hand and slapped him hard. The room went silent.
Holding his cheek, rage burned in his eyes.
“You witch!”
He raised his hand, ready to strike, when a commanding voice cut through the air.
“Who dares touch what’s mine?”
