His Rejection at Altar Choosing Over The Alpha Chapter 7

His Rejection at Altar Choosing Over The Alpha Chapter 7 – Unexpected Company
The days after I returned Quinn’s ring passed more quietly than I’d expected.

No message. No surprise visit. No attempt to chase me down and fix things with his usual routine.

Part of me was relieved. The other part—still bruised—felt the quiet like a hollow space where noise used to be.

I needed something to fill it. Not a distraction. Something real.

So when Penny mentioned a joint community project between packs—rebuilding storm-damaged shelters near the southern forest—I signed up without hesitation.

I needed movement. Purpose. New faces.

I arrived at the worksite in a borrowed truck, hair tied up, no makeup, and zero expectations.

What I didn’t expect was him.

Callan.

He stood on the far side of the lot, sleeves rolled up, guiding volunteers as they unloaded supplies. He looked different outside the city, like someone born to command but never flaunting it.

When he noticed me, his brow lifted in surprise—but not disbelief.

“Hey,” he said, wiping his hands as he walked over. “Didn’t think I’d see you again.”

“Neither did I,” I admitted.

“Guess we both like rooftops and service projects,” he quipped.

I smiled. “You volunteering too?”

He nodded. “My pack’s one of the sponsors. I usually send someone else, but… I needed some quiet too.”

That made two of us.

We ended up working side by side most of the day, hammering boards, hauling supplies, and chatting between water breaks.

It wasn’t like talking to Quinn.

Callan didn’t fill silences. He let them exist. He didn’t correct me or rush to fix things. He listened.

At one point, while passing tools between us, our hands brushed. He paused, glancing at me.

“I’m guessing things with your Alpha… ended?”

I nodded. “They were already over. I just didn’t know it yet.”

He was quiet for a moment. Then, “Good.”

That single word—simple, unpolished—hit me harder than I expected.

Not because it meant anything romantic. But because it wasn’t pity. It wasn’t apology. It was approval. And that, I realized, was something I hadn’t felt in a long, long time.

As the sun began to set, the sky turned honey-gold. Volunteers gathered around the fire pit, laughing and sharing stories. I found myself sitting beside Callan, the flicker of flames dancing across his profile.

“I like this version of you,” he said.

“What version?”

“This one,” he said, gesturing around us. “Out here. Honest. Not looking over her shoulder.”

I tilted my head. “You don’t even know me.”

He met my gaze. “Not yet.”

Something in my chest shifted.

It wasn’t the pull of a mate bond. It wasn’t electricity or fate.

It was peace.

A calm that whispered: maybe it’s not too late to begin again.
