His Rejection at Altar Choosing Over The Alpha Chapter 5 – The Delta’s Game
The packhouse was quiet when I stopped by to collect a few things I’d left behind.
Most of the staff were out front dealing with post-dinner cleanup. I walked through the back hallway, the one that led past the administrative offices. Quinn’s door was closed. I didn’t plan on knocking.
I didn’t want another conversation wrapped in professional tone and personal indifference.
But as I passed by Delta Carmen’s office, I heard her voice through the crack of her half-open door.
“I’ve practically done half his job for him,” she said, her tone low but sharp.
I froze.
“Of course I’m playing the long game. You think I’ve been staying late just for the paperwork?” A pause. Then a soft, confident laugh. “No, no. He won’t name me Beta—not yet. But he’s close. He leans on me more than anyone else. His mate? She’s a relic. Everyone knows it.”
A chill ran down my spine. I stepped back, careful not to make a sound.
“I’m not rushing it. I’ll be standing beside him when it counts. And if not… well, I’ve made my contacts. I won’t be stuck in the shadows forever.”
I didn’t need to hear more.
I turned and walked away, every step heavier than the last.
So it hadn’t been love after all—not for her. It was power. Position. Legacy.
I remembered how she looked at him last night—how natural they seemed, how in sync.
It was calculated.
Every touch, every laugh, every whisper.
She knew exactly what she was doing.
And he—he had no idea. Or maybe he didn’t care, so long as someone was by his side.
By the time I got outside, I was shaking—but not with rage.
With clarity.
For years, I’d told myself I wasn’t enough. That I must’ve done something wrong. That maybe I’d clung too tightly, hoped too much.
But it was never about me.
It was about him.
His blind spots. His choices. His comfort in someone who didn’t challenge him—only enabled him.
He didn’t need a mate.
He needed a mirror.
And Delta Carmen was more than willing to hold it up, so long as it reflected her own rise.
I took out my phone, opened the contact labeled “Alpha Quinn,” and hovered over the “Delete” button.
Not yet.
Not because I still held on—but because I wanted him to know the truth when I finally walked away.
For good.
