His Rejection at Altar Choosing Over The Alpha Chapter 2 – The Weight of Routine and Unspoken Words
Both Alpha Quinn and I knew he wouldn’t come to pick me up. Still, we went through this routine conversation. Because there was nothing else left to say.
I scrolled through our recent chat history—not a single exchange went beyond ten words. The most frequent message from him was:
[Not coming home tonight.]
And then there was Delta Carmen.
[Delta Carmen and I…]
Going on business trips with Delta Carmen, meeting clients with Delta Carmen, heading to the airport with Delta Carmen.
Alpha Quinn had one redeeming quality—he never hid these things from me. But he never realized that what bothered me wasn’t whether he kept me informed or whether he came to pick me up. It was that in ten sentences, he mentioned Delta Carmen seven times. That kind of attention—I couldn’t stand it.
It wasn’t like I hadn’t brought it up before. I’d brought it up dozens of times. I could recite his responses by heart.
「It’s just work.」
「She’s my assistant; it’s all professional.」
「You know how it is—without her, the company wouldn’t have gotten off the ground.」
「You’re overthinking it. Don’t be so petty.」
I hailed a cab. The driver, seeing me step out of the hotel, reeking of alcohol, offered some advice:
「Miss, you’ve been drinking. Do you need someone to pick you up when we get there?」
There was no one to pick me up. I shook my head and rolled down the window. The city nightscape blurred past.
Suddenly, I wondered—was it because I’d been too flashy back then? Wore that ceremonial dress too soon? Is that why I’m still unmated? But what if I did mate with him? Would it always be like this? Watching the crowds outside the window, I questioned for the first time—did I even still want to mate with Alpha Quinn?
The next morning, Penny’s calls jolted me awake.
「Kaitlyn, the more I think about it, the more it doesn’t sit right. What was Alpha Quinn’s deal yesterday?」
「You’ve been together seven years, and he can’t even give you a straight answer?」
I was at a loss for words. Because I didn’t know either. Logically, I should’ve been furious when he left me hanging like that yesterday. But this time, I wasn’t. Because I was used to it.
My phone buzzed with a new message.
【Pack dinner tonight. I’ll pick you up.】
I hesitated. Because he rarely ever took me to meet his packmates. Seemed like he was trying to make it up.
[Yesterday, there really was an issue at the packhouse. Don’t overthink it.]
Alpha Quinn was still Alpha Quinn. Always quick to sense the tension between us and even quicker to fix it. Our conflicts never lasted more than three days. Because he always followed the same script to resolve them.
Every time I got upset and wanted to talk things through, he’d pull out that same routine. Once the script was done, whether I agreed or not, he’d assume the problem was solved. If I kept pushing, he’d shut down. His eyes would ask: What are you even making a fuss about? He never considered that some things couldn’t just be solved!
Relationships aren’t like pack business. Pack business is about efficiency. Relationships aren’t.
【Okay.】
I went back to my room, picked out an outfit, did my makeup, and dressed to the nines. But as I looked at myself in the mirror, I couldn’t muster a smile. In the past, I would’ve been thrilled that he wanted to introduce me to his packmates. Now, it just felt like a hassle.
I waited for him outside my building. Passersby glanced at my overly polished appearance. I waited and waited, but he wasn’t answering my calls or texts. Fine, I’ll just take a cab.
When I arrived at the venue and followed the staff inside, the dinner was already in full swing. The room was lively, groups of pack members chatting and laughing. I felt out of place. No sign of Alpha Quinn, no one I knew. I found a corner and sat down.
Then I saw Alpha Quinn, arm in arm with Delta Carmen, walking in. The moment he entered, he became the center of attention. They made their rounds, mingling with everyone. I watched as Delta Carmen smoothly handed Alpha Quinn a drink…
