After Losing His Memory, He Begged My Forgiveness Novel Chapter 20 – The Paper Cut
Lily stared at the custody papers long after the ink had blurred in her vision.
Melissa wanted joint custody.
Of her daughter.
The same daughter Melissa had called a mistake the one time they crossed paths in the hospital cafeteria. The same child John had barely acknowledged until recently.
The paper shook in Lily’s hands—not because of fear, but fury.
Her first instinct was to burn it. But instead, she snapped a picture and sent it to John with no caption.
Ten minutes later, her phone rang.
It was him.
She picked up but said nothing.
“Lily,” John’s voice was rough with disbelief, “What the hell is this?”
“I was hoping you could tell me,” she said coldly.
“I didn’t—God, I didn’t authorize this. I didn’t even know—Melissa must’ve used something I signed months ago. I’m going to fix this. I’ll shut it down.”
Lily wanted to believe him. But her walls were back up, stone by stone.
“I don’t care what your intentions were. She used your name. That makes this your responsibility.”
“I know. You’re right. I’ll take care of it. Just… don’t worry, okay?”
“Too late,” she whispered, and ended the call.
That night, Lily sat beside her daughter as she colored, pretending the world wasn’t shaking beneath them.
“Mommy,” her daughter asked, “do I have to live in two houses now?”
“No,” Lily said firmly, stroking her hair. “You’re staying with me. No matter what.”
The next day, Lily’s lawyer filed an emergency motion to block the custody petition.
But she wasn’t the only one making moves.
John showed up at Melissa’s penthouse, stormed past the concierge, and banged on her door like a man possessed.
She opened it with a coy smile. “Did you get my little surprise?”
He didn’t even answer. “Withdraw the petition.”
“Oh, I don’t think so,” she purred. “You think you’ve changed, John, but you’re still just a man who runs back to the woman who made you feel small. Lily doesn’t love you. She pities you.”
He grabbed the envelope off her coffee table—the original custody filing—and tore it down the middle.
“You’re not getting near my daughter,” he said, voice low and dangerous. “And the next time you use my name, I’ll drag you to court myself.”
Melissa’s smile cracked. “You really think Lily will take you back? After everything?”
“No,” John said. “But I’ll spend the rest of my life proving I’m not the man I used to be. Even if she never forgives me.”
