After Losing His Memory, He Begged My Forgiveness Novel Chapter 16 – When the Wind Changes

Spring came early that year.

The city thawed, slowly waking from winter’s hold. Trees along Lily’s street began to bloom—soft pinks and whites dusting the air like a whisper. It was the kind of season that made people believe in new beginnings.

But Lily wasn’t sure she did.

Not yet.

She was on her way to her daughter’s school for a parent meeting. Just a routine check-in. Nothing dramatic. Except when she walked in, she saw him.

John.

He was sitting on a bench outside the classroom, a small bouquet of violets in his hand—her favorite. Dressed simply, no designer coat, no watch—just a man trying to look like he belonged in the world again.

He stood when he saw her. “Lily.”

She didn’t speak, just stared. Part of her thought she was dreaming.

“I called the school,” he explained. “Asked if I could sit in for the meeting. They said yes, as long as it was okay with you.”

Lily glanced toward the classroom door. Then back at him. “Why?”

John’s grip on the flowers tightened slightly. “Because I missed too much already. I want to understand what kind of person she’s growing up to be.”

Lily’s chest ached with conflicting emotion. “You could’ve asked.”

“I didn’t think I had the right,” he said. “But I’m trying to earn it.”

She hesitated for a long moment. Then sighed. “You can stay.”

They sat through the meeting together. The teacher spoke of their daughter’s creativity, her kindness, her tendency to protect quieter kids. At one point, she pulled out a drawing from a recent assignment.

“She was supposed to draw her family,” the teacher smiled. “She drew a castle. Said it had cracks in the walls, but the people inside were still trying to fix them.”

John stared at the drawing for a long time.

Afterward, as they walked down the school steps, he said quietly, “She’s amazing.”

“She is,” Lily agreed.

John hesitated. “Would it be okay if I saw her once in a while? Nothing sudden. Nothing confusing. Just… as a friend of the family.”

Lily stopped walking.

“John,” she said slowly. “This isn’t about you earning your way back in. This is about consistency. Stability. She can’t be your redemption arc.”

“I know,” he said, voice steady. “This isn’t about fixing me. It’s about not failing her again.”

Lily studied his face.

He wasn’t begging. He wasn’t bluffing. He was… different.

Maybe still broken.

But different.

“I’ll think about it,” she said.

John smiled faintly. “That’s more than I hoped for.”

They parted ways at the corner.

And for the first time in a long time, Lily didn’t feel like she was walking away from something.

She felt like she was walking toward something new.
