After Losing His Memory, He Begged My Forgiveness Novel Chapter 15 – Echoes of the Past
The days passed in a blur after John left.
Lily went about her routine—school drop-offs, freelance work, cooking dinner—all while pretending the ache in her chest wasn’t real. Her daughter asked fewer questions than expected. Kids were sharper than adults gave them credit for. She just hugged her mom a little longer every night, as if she knew Lily needed it.
Then, one gray afternoon, a letter arrived. Handwritten. No return address.
She opened it cautiously.
Lily,
I’ve been staying at my mother’s house in the countryside. It’s quiet here. Too quiet sometimes. But it’s where I found the journals—the ones you wrote me during our first year of marriage.
I forgot how much I meant to you. Or maybe I just stopped being that man, and somewhere deep down, I didn’t want to be reminded.
*I read every word. I cried over some of them. I remembered things that don’t match what I saw in the mirror these past years.
I remembered the first time I heard our daughter laugh. I remembered promising to protect you. I remembered how fiercely I loved you.*
Melissa visited yesterday.
She begged me to leave you behind, to “start fresh.” Said you were holding me back with guilt. That she’d already forgiven me.But Lily… I don’t want her forgiveness. I want yours.
I’m not asking you to forget. I’m not even asking you to take me back.
I just wanted you to know that, for the first time in a very long while, I see myself clearly.
And I hate what I became.
–John
Lily read it once. Twice. Then tucked it away in a drawer she rarely opened.
That evening, her daughter stood by the window with Mr. Bun under her arm.
“Is he ever coming back?” she asked, her voice quiet.
Lily knelt beside her, brushing the girl’s curls aside.
“I don’t know,” she said truthfully.
“Would you be sad if he didn’t?”
Lily paused.
“Yes,” she admitted. “But not because I miss the old days. I’d be sad if he gave up on becoming a better version of himself.”
Her daughter didn’t say anything, just leaned into her.
“Is it okay to hope a little?” the girl asked softly.
Lily kissed her temple. “It’s always okay to hope a little.”
Meanwhile, far away from the city lights, John sat under a tree at dusk, holding a faded photograph of their wedding day.
And for the first time since waking up in that hospital room, he didn’t feel like a stranger to himself.
He finally knew what he wanted to fight for.
Not to go back.
But to move forward.
