After Losing His Memory, He Begged My Forgiveness Novel Chapter 14 – Truth, Uninvited

Lily stared at the paused video on her laptop screen, her fingers trembling over the trackpad. The timestamp didn’t lie. Three weeks before John’s accident. Three weeks before he forgot everything. Three weeks before the man standing in her kitchen now began pretending to be someone else.

She didn’t press play again. She didn’t need to. That one frame—John standing close to Melissa, hand on her waist, lips moving like he was saying something intimate—was enough.

The knock on her door made her jump.

John.

“Hey,” he said softly, holding two cups of tea. “I thought you might want—”

“Put them down,” she said, sharper than intended.

He paused, brows knitting. “What’s wrong?”

Lily closed the laptop slowly, deliberately. Her eyes never left his face. “Did you remember something recently… about Melissa?”

John blinked. “No. Why?”

Lily motioned to the table. “Then you might want to take a look at this.”

He walked over, still holding the tea. She opened the laptop again, pressing play this time.

He watched.

And watched.

And watched.

By the time the clip ended, John was visibly shaking. “I—I don’t remember this,” he whispered. “I swear, Lily, I don’t remember doing that. I didn’t know—”

“But you did do it,” she said quietly.

“I don’t feel like the man in that video,” he said helplessly, collapsing into the nearest chair. “I’ve been trying to fix everything. Trying to be better. I thought…”

Lily didn’t respond.

She couldn’t tell if the silence between them was grief or rage.

Maybe both.

“I believe you don’t remember,” she said eventually. “But I also believe you did this. And now, I have to ask myself…”

She swallowed hard. “Do I forgive the man in front of me for the sins of a man he used to be?”

John lifted his eyes to her. “Would it matter if I told you I hate that version of me too?”

Lily shook her head. “It only matters if you never become him again.”

That night, John didn’t sleep in the guest room.

He didn’t sleep in the house at all.

He walked for hours, past midnight, under flickering street lamps. Melissa’s face haunted him, but so did Lily’s. The disappointment in her eyes felt worse than the betrayal in the video.

He sat on a bench near the old bakery they used to visit, back when they were broke and dreaming. His phone buzzed, breaking the silence.

Unknown Number:
She finally saw it. Now let’s see if she still thinks you’re worth saving. – M.

John deleted the message.

Then he threw the phone into the canal.

The next morning, Lily woke up to find a note on the kitchen table.

It simply read:

“I need to remember who I was—to make sure I never become him again. Don’t wait for me.”
