After Losing His Memory, He Begged My Forgiveness Novel Chapter 12 – The Woman Who Refused to Let Go

The next morning, Lily opened her front door to find Melissa standing there.

Dressed impeccably in a designer coat and heels too high for the cracked sidewalk, Melissa looked out of place in Lily’s modest neighborhood. But her expression was anything but polished—dark circles under her eyes, lips twisted in anger.

“I want to talk,” she said.

Lily raised an eyebrow. “No.”

She tried to close the door, but Melissa shoved her foot in. “You don’t get to push me out of his life like this.”

“I didn’t push you out. He doesn’t remember you.” Lily’s voice was quiet but firm.

“That’s temporary.” Melissa stepped inside, uninvited. “And when his memory comes back, he’ll remember what we had. You’re just a placeholder until then.”

Lily didn’t flinch. “He remembered you last week.”

Melissa blinked. “What?”

Lily folded her arms. “He remembered being with you. But instead of love or warmth… all he wrote next to your name was regret.”

Melissa’s mask cracked. Her breath caught in her throat. “You’re lying.”

“Believe what you want,” Lily said. “But you should go. I won’t let you confuse my daughter or mess with his recovery.”

Melissa stood still for a moment, breathing hard. Then she gave a bitter laugh. “You really think he’s going to fall back in love with you? That a few muffins and bedtime stories are going to erase everything he did to you?”

“No,” Lily said simply. “But I’m not trying to erase anything. I’m just letting him see it for what it was.”

Melissa’s eyes narrowed. “I’m not leaving.”

“Then I’ll call security,” John said behind them.

Melissa whirled around. He stood in the hallway, holding their daughter’s school jacket. His expression was unreadable.

“You remember me,” she said quickly, stepping forward.

John nodded. “I do. I remember… the affair. The excuses. The hotel. The pain in Lily’s eyes.”

He set the jacket down. “And I remember how I let myself believe it was okay. That it was my right, because I worked hard, because I was tired, because I deserved… something more.”

Melissa reached for him. “You loved me.”

“No,” he said calmly. “I loved the escape you offered. The lie that I wasn’t hurting the people who mattered.”

Lily stood still, watching. Part of her wanted to walk away. Part of her wanted to scream.

But she stayed quiet.

Melissa’s hand dropped. “So that’s it? You just… throw me away like garbage?”

“I already did,” John replied, eyes steady. “Long before the accident. I just didn’t realize it until now.”

Melissa let out a sharp breath, turned, and stormed out.

John closed the door behind her.

Silence fell in the apartment.

Lily picked up the school jacket, brushing it off. “You okay?”

He looked at her, pain flashing in his eyes. “No. But I’m getting there.”

She nodded.

For the first time in a long time, they stood side by side—not as enemies, not quite as lovers—but maybe, just maybe, as something in between.
