His Lies My Revenge Novel Chapter 4

His Lies My Revenge Novel Chapter 4 – “Now that you mention it, I remember too.

Martin never used to show up at crime scenes, but that time, he insisted on going. Said he wanted to be there with his brother. And the second they arrived, he started asking around about Rachel.”

“Yeah, she must’ve meant something to them. I mean, it freaked both of them out. They were totally unhinged. I’ve never seen a detective and a forensic pathologist lose it like that. They almost shot the suspect on the spot.”

“Enough. You shouldn’t be talking about this. Someone pointed to Rachel as the killer back then, and the brothers practically turned the department upside down to clear her name. It’s dangerous to bring that up.”

My nails dug into my palms as I clenched my fists.

I drifted toward Martin’s office like I was in a trance, stopping when I heard voices from inside—voices I knew all too well.

“How have you been these past five years?”

“You still don’t get your brother, do you?” Rachel laughed lightly. “He used to say he’d pull stars from the sky for me. I only mentioned wanting a baby, and he locked me in the bedroom for three days straight. I could barely walk afterward.”

Martin let out a bitter chuckle. “Yeah… Mark’s always loved you. I should’ve seen that coming.”

“Thank you, Martin. If you hadn’t steered public opinion back then, leaking that story about the Sward family’s betrayal, I’d be rotting in prison by now.”

“I just worry Jessie might figure it out. She didn’t suspect anything, did she? If you two end up fighting because of me, I’d never forgive myself…”

Martin brushed her concern aside with a smug wave. “Don’t worry about her. The reputation of two dead people isn’t worth much. As long as you’re safe, everything I’ve done was worth it.”

It felt like someone wrapped a steel wire around my heart and pulled tight. I couldn’t breathe.

I’d thought Martin was just avoiding the truth. I believed he was trying to protect Rachel.

But I never imagined… he was the one who started the rumors that destroyed my parents.

They’d dedicated their lives to justice and died for it. Why did they deserve to be buried in shame?

Before I could process it, I heard Martin again, this time handing Rachel something.

“I heard you’re expecting too. Here, a little gift for the baby. Just a small toy.”

The divorce agreement in my hand slipped through my fingers. The soft sound of paper brushing the floor made them both turn toward the door.

Martin rushed out, his face pale. “Jessie? How long have you been standing there? Why didn’t you say something?”

I bent down slowly, picked up the papers, and stood. Whatever emotions had flooded me a moment ago were gone. I was calm now—ice cold.

“I was just passing by,” I said evenly. “Thought I’d drop in for a second. I just got here.”

“You don’t need to worry,” he said quickly. “Rachel was just checking in on Mark. He’s out on a mission. We were just talking.”

Rachel stood and gave a little wave, completely unfazed. “Wow, Jessie, what a coincidence.”

I didn’t respond. I didn’t want to look at her for even another second. I turned to leave.

Martin followed close behind, quickening his pace to match mine.

“You’re upset,” he said gently. “Don’t be. Rachel’s my sister-in-law. There’s nothing going on. She’s pregnant too—I was just asking her about precautions. I want to take better care of you, that’s all.”

He reached out and grabbed my arm. From the corner of my eye, I saw his grip tighten.

I suddenly laughed.

This man—this man who destroyed my family to protect Rachel, who let my parents die with a traitor’s name, who wasted five years of my life—is now pretending to care?

He’d already declared Rachel innocent. So what was he pretending for now?

“You said Rachel was just a hostage,” I said, turning to face him. “So tell me—why would I be suspicious? Unless you’re hiding something?”
