Moonborn Heir Novel Chapter 22 – As I wake up, a warm, rich aroma fills the air — a heady mix of butter, sweetness, and a hint of
vanilla.
Pancakes. My heart swells, and a smile spreads across my face. I only mentioned it to Lucian last night, a passing comment about a craving, and here he is, up early to make them for me. It’s so unlike him — Alpha, warrior, fierce protector — and yet, so sweetly him.
I stretch and slide out of bed, savoring the thought of that first bite, but as I make my way to the closet, a strange wave of nausea rolls through me. The smell — so mouthwatering a moment ago — suddenly turns my stomach. My insides churn, and before I know it, I’m bolting for the bathroom.
My knees hit the cold tile, and I clutch the edge of the sink, just in time for my stomach to empty itself. The delicious scent of pancakes now feels like an assault, lingering and taunting me as I gasp for breath.
“You can’t keep this a secret much longer, Talia,” Eira’s voice murmurs in my mind, soft yet insistent. There’s a tinge of humor in her tone, but also a warning. “I know,” I reply inwardly, pressing my cool hand to my forehead, trying to steady myself. “I just…I’m afraid to tell him.”
Eira’s presence within me feels like a warm, comforting pulse, steady and calm. “Why, Talia? He deserves to know. He’s your mate now. He cares for you deeply.”
I swallow, gripping the edge of the sink tightly, my knuckles white. “But this isn’t his child,” I whisper in my mind, my voice trembling with the words. “It’s…Kael’s.” The truth hangs heavy between us, thickening the air around me. “What if…what if he doesn’t accept the baby?
What if he sees this child as a reminder of Kael, of everything that happened between us?” “Talia,” Eira’s voice is soft, almost a whisper, soothing but firm. “Lucian has proven himself time and time again.
He’ll accept any child you birth as his own. The prophecy — it speaks of the Moonborn Heir, destined to unite the packs. The life you carry is part of that destiny, and Lucian will believe that life came from his loins.” I close my eyes, leaning into the reassurance, though fear still lingers like a shadow.
“I want to believe that, Eira. I do. But a part of me…I worry he’ll see through it, or worse, that he’ll resent me for keeping this secret.” “He won’t,” Eira assures me, her tone unwavering. “Let him believe he got you pregnant. He’ll love any child of yours as fiercely as he loves you, Talia.
As your Alpha mate, it’s his responsibility to protect you and your children, to embrace this bond.” I take a deep, steadying breath, Eira’s words grounding me, filling me with a reluctant sense ofresolve. “Alright,” I whisper to myself. “I’ll tell him today.” With that final thought, I gather my courage, squaring my shoulders before stepping out of the bathroom.
Swallowing my nerves, I make my way back into the bedroom, inhaling deeply to steady myself before walking out to find him in the dining room. As I approach, the smell of pancakes waftsaround me again, but this time, instead of nausea, I’m filled with a fierce hunger. Lucian stands by the table, a spatula in hand, his usually intense expression softened with arare, tender smile. He looks up as I enter, his gaze lighting up, and my heart skips a beat.
“Good morning, my Luna,” he greets, a hint of pride in his voice as he gestures to the plate stacked with golden, fluffy pancakes. “Figured you’d like a treat to start the day.” I smile, moving closer and brushing my hand over his arm as I pass him. “Thank you, Lucian,” I murmur, and my voice sounds smaller than I intended. For a second, I hesitate, but then hunger overtakes me, and I sit down, tearing into the pancakes with a fervor that almost surprises me.
He chuckles, settling beside me, watching as I devour each bite. “I think I hit the mark,” he says, his tone teasing. Between bites, I look up at him, my heart pounding with anticipation. Now or never. I clear my throat, setting down my fork, and meet his gaze. “Lucian…there’s something I need to tell you.”
His brow furrows, a shadow of concern passing over his face. “What is it?” I take a deep breath, feeling my pulse quicken. “I…I’m pregnant.” A moment of silence hangs between us, the weight of my words filling the space.
His expression shifts, his eyes widening, and then his face softens, wonder and pride overtaking him. “You’re…you’re carrying our child?” he breathes, reaching out to take my hand in his, his grip warm and steady. I nod, unable to speak past the lump in my throat. He believes it. Relief floods through me,
mingling with a guilt that I push deep down. This is what’s best. This is what’s safe.
Lucian’s gaze becomes intense, almost reverent, as he places a hand over my stomach, his touch gentle yet possessive. “The Moonborn Heir,” he whispers, his voice thick with emotion. “It’s the prophecy, Talia. Our child is destined to be more than we ever imagined.”
I manage a nod, blinking back the tears that threaten to spill. He’s overjoyed, lost in a dream of legacy and destiny, and I let him believe it all, even as my own heart aches with the truth. After breakfast, we head to the council meeting. Lucian’s mood is brighter than I’ve seen in days, his pride radiating from him like moonlight as we enter the hall.
The Darkguard is gathered, a mix of battle-worn faces and eager loyalty. Cade stands at the back, a shadowed look in his eyes, and beside him…Rhea.
My stomach twists. Rhea shouldn’t be here — she’s not a member of the guard. Lucian’s gaze flickers to her, a moment of tension, but he lets it go, perhaps too focused on the news we’re about to share.
He stands tall, his arm wrapped protectively around my shoulders as he addresses the room. “I have news,” he announces, his voice steady, reverberating through the hall. “Talia and I are expecting a child — an heir to Darkfang.”
A murmur ripples through the room, gasps mingling with shocked whispers. Lucian’s arm wraps around my shoulders, pulling me close as he beams at our pack. His pride radiates, unrestrained, but the pressure of so many eyes makes my pulse race.
Rhea steps forward, her eyes locked on mine, a fierce question blazing in her gaze. “An heir?” Her voice is soft but cuts through the murmurs.
I feel the air grow thin, a chill sweeping over me. Desperately, I meet her gaze, shaking my head subtly. Please, Rhea. Not now.
She hesitates, a muscle working in her jaw. “Talia…” she starts, her voice trembling slightly. Lucian glances at her, frowning in mild confusion. “Rhea, is there something wrong?” he asks, a trace of authority lacing his tone.
Rhea’s eyes dart to Lucian, then back to me, her jaw clenching tightly. For a breathless moment, I’m certain she’s going to spill everything. But then, with visible restraint, she forces a smile and lowers her gaze. “No, Alpha,” she murmurs, her voice tight. “Congratulations.”
Lucian’s frown eases, and he nods, oblivious to the turmoil brewing between us. “Our pack is stronger than ever,” he announces to the room, his voice filled with conviction. “This child will lead Darkfang into a new era.”
The Darkguard erupts in cheers, voices rising in celebration. But as I glance around, my gaze lands on Cade, standing at the edge of the room, watching me with a smoldering intensity. His eyes narrow, suspicion flickering within them. He catches my eye, tilting his head slightly, and I feel a surge of unease, like he’s peeling back layers to see the truth buried within me.
“Our Luna has truly brought us strength,” Cade says suddenly, his voice loud enough to cut through the cheers. He raises an eyebrow, his gaze never leaving mine. “A strong heir, indeed.” There’s a dark edge to his tone, his words carrying a weight that only I seem to feel.
Lucian nods, grinning at Cade’s words, but I can’t shake the icy chill running down my spine. The cheering continues around us, but Cade’s stare lingers, his eyes filled with questions I’m not ready to answer.
Beside me, Lucian is radiant with pride, utterly unaware of the tightening noose of secrets that coils around us. And all I can think is how close we came — how close we still are — to everything unraveling.
