booklet back before your brother comes back.” Paula nodded, took Lucia’s hand
in hers, and said emotionally, “Lucia, I didn’t make friends with the wrong person
after all.” Lucia was touched and smiled at her friend. “Go back and take a good
rest.”
Paula nodded, winked at her, and said meaningfully, “That’s right. A tough stretch
is awaiting me tonight.”
Lucia made no comments. After saying goodbye to them, she drove home, put
the residence bookdet back into the drawer, and exited the
room. Deep down, she knew that Paul would find out sooner or later. She just
needed to buy her friend some time. It would no longer be an
issue if Paula could persuade her parents.
In the afternoon, she planned to spend some quality time with the kids. When
she woke up from a nap, her phone suddenly rang on the head of the bed. The
sight of the caller ID surprised her. It was Darnell calling. They hadn’t been in
touch since he took her to the hospital
to see Garnett.
This was sudden. Was anything wrong? She somewhat felt upset since the caller
was someone who had helped her before. She took a deep breath, picked up the
phone, and pressed the answer button.
“Hello”
The caller got straight to the point. “Are you free this afternoon? Can you come
out?”
She asked wonderingly, “What is it about?”
Darnell hesitated for a moment and asked, “Could you do me a favor?”
Lucia froze and felt amused. She hadn’t expected this man to ask a favor from

with?
She raised her eyebrows and asked with a tinge of amusement in her voice,
“What kind of favor?”
Darnell brought it up after a moment of awkward silence. “I have a friend who is
going to celebrate her birthday in a couple of days. I have
no idea what kind of gift to give her. I don’t have many female friends and thought
of you who should know what girls like.”
Lucia laughed, “Don’t tell me that you’ve never dated anyone before. The gift shouldn’t be a problem”
Her guess happened to be correct. After a moment of silence, Darnell smiled,
“So, are you going to help me or not?”
Lucia chuckled, “Since you ask, I have no reason to refuse.”
Darnell laughed, “Okay, tell me where you live. I’ll go pick you up in an hour.”
Lucia declined, “It’s okay. Just tell me the address of the mall. I’ll be there in my
car.”
“Okay.” He hung up the phone and soon sent her the address.
Lucia read with the little ones for a while and left for the mall. Half an hour later, she
parked the car and headed toward the entrance. The big man was not in a military uniform
today. He was wearing black casual clothes. Still, he looked upright. The passers-by
couldn’t help glancing at him. She walked over with a smile. Those fashionable girls were
looking at him with admiration.
Just as she was going to tease him, Darnell litted his left hand, looked down at his
wristwatch, and enunciated, “You’re late for three
minutes and 21 seconds.”
His words immediately dampened her spirits. She opened her mouth, trying to explain that

She took a deep breath and said, “Sorry about that. I’ll buy you a cup of bubble tea to
make up.” Darnell sized her up and smiled, “I never drink that kind of stuff. It will make me
out of shape.”
He then headed inside the mall. After the initial surprise, Lucia rolled her eyes. This guy
was really ‘nice’ to talk to. Not until the man
walked off that she came to her senses and trotted to catch up. He needed her help, but
his attitude made her feel like a sidekick. After aimlessly going around with him for a while,
she lost her patience and asked, “What kind of gift do you want to buy? Clothes,
jewelry, or cosmetics? You have a rough idea, right?”
Darnell suddenly halted and seriously looked back at her. “I wouldn’t have called you if I
knew.”
Lucia fought back the urge to roll her eyes. “Ugh.”
“If you help me take care of it today, I’ll treat you to dinner.” He saw her expression and
smiled, “And there will be bubble tea.” “You said you didn’t drink it.”
“No, but you do.” He then headed toward a women’s clothing store and left her standing
there in a daze
